JOB DESCRIPTION – CREW MEMBER

Position Title: Survey Crew Member
Department: Surveying
Location: NWSE – Bemidji
Reports To: Crew Chief / Project Manager
Job Summary:
The Survey Crew Member assists the survey crew in collecting data required for boundary, topographic, hydrographic, construction, 4-way sweeps (if in Bemidji) and other surveys. This position involves working outdoors, operating survey instruments, Radiodection locating equipment and ensuring accurate measurements.

Requirements for Employment

  • Drug Test: Candidates must pass a pre-employment drug screening test as a condition of employment. The drug/alcohol test is thru Pipeline Testing Consortium, Inc.
  • Ongoing Monitoring: Employees will be subject to random drug testing throughout their employment. This is to ensure a safe and productive work environment and comply with company policies.
  • Compliance: Employees must comply with all company policies related to drug and alcohol use.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in Field Surveys: Work under the direction of the Crew Chief to conduct field surveys by setting up and operating various types of survey equipment, including GPS receivers, total stations, and data collectors.
  • Data Collection: Accurately record field data and maintain detailed notes of survey activities.
  • Equipment Handling: Transport, set up, and safely use surveying instruments and equipment. Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Stakeout and Marking: Assist in the stakeout of points, lines, and grades for construction purposes, marking locations with appropriate materials.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety procedures and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment. Report any hazards or incidents to the Crew Chief immediately.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other survey crew members and communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, and clients as needed.
  • Documentation: Assist in preparing sketches, maps, and reports to document survey results.
  • Travel: Travel to various job sites as required, sometimes for extended periods of 1 to 2 weeks at a time.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Prior surveying, geomatics, construction experience or a related field is a plus.
  • Experience: Prior experience in surveying or a related field is preferred but not required. On-the-job training will be provided.  Prior utility locating experience is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Basic understanding of survey principles and techniques.
    • Proficiency with survey instruments and software is advantageous.
    • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
    • Ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, and technical drawings.
    • Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
    • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
    • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.

 

  • Licenses/Certifications: A valid driver’s license is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment and materials (up to 50 pounds).
  • Capability to walk, stand, and work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and rain.

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoor fieldwork at construction sites, rural areas, and urban environments.
  • Travel to different job sites, which may require overnight stays.
